Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) Projects 2003-2008
Interesting ICT4D projects that my teams led at Microsoft
include the following. More information is available on the
Microsoft Unlimited Potential
site.
- Built the business plan for and shipped multiple releases of
Windows
Starter Edition, the versions of Windows XP and Vista designed for
first-time PC users, available in over 139 countries and 58
languages, selling for half the price of traditional Windows.
- Created Windows SteadyState which has been installed on millions of
shared PCs, reducing the cost of management and increasing quality
and stability of the Windows experience for telecenter, iCafe,
school computer lab and other shared access users.
- Identified the need for exceptionally-low-cost software to pair with
government- or NGO-donated laptop computers, built a pricing and
packaging plan, and launched the Microsoft Student Innovation Suite
which makes Windows + Office + Live Services available for $3 to
qualified customers.
- Created the Subscription Computing Program, providing
marketing support and licensing to telco and mobile operators
who've delivered millions of low-cost bundles of telecom
services plus a PC for mid-to-low income customers.
- Researched and delivered FlexGo hardware, software, and service
which together comprise the first solution enabling secure
subscription and pay-as-you-go business models to be applied to
Windows PCs. FlexGo aims to give affordable access to computing to
low-income consumers and small businesses in emerging segments.
- Built the business case and industry support for "mobile broadband
PCs" launched in partnership with GSM association and multiple
network operators.
- Created and piloted the Microsoft Managed Interactive Learning
Platform and Application, a learning solution that provides access
to learning and training curriculum, and professor expertise to
students who may not have regular access to a classroom.
- Researched, defined, and launched Microsoft's foray into mobile
payment technologies for mainstream (non-smartphone) mobile phones
in emerging markets, resulting in investments in and strategic
partnerships with Blue Label Telecoms in SA and Oxigen in India.
